UNESCO condemns Russia's attack on Odesa historic center
Last night, on January 31, the Russian Federation launched a missile attack on the historic center of Odesa, damaging cultural buildings. UNESCO has already responded and condemned the Russian attack.
"UNESCO condemns the missile attack on the historic center of Odesa last night, a World Heritage site, severely damaging at least two cultural buildings placed under UNESCO Conventions’ protection", the statement said.
The post states that these repeated attacks must stop and that international law must be respected.
"Our team is already at work to promptly support the urgent documentation of damage and identify with the Ukrainian authorities the required emergency interventions," the post adds.
The page also informed that UNESCO would send a mission shortly.
Attack on Odesa
Today, Odesa Mayor Gennadii Trukhanov informed that as a result of yesterday's Russian attack, about 15 cultural heritage monuments were damaged in the city.
The most valuable of the damaged buildings is the Philharmonic (New Exchange), which has been under enhanced UNESCO protection since 2023.
