Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reacted sharply to reports of possible attempts by individuals close to US President Donald Trump to influence political processes in Greenland, DR reports.

Frederiksen discussed the situation during a meeting with a US Senate delegation. She emphasized that Denmark takes such attempts at interference very seriously and intends to clearly convey its position to American counterparts to prevent any attempts to deny the facts.

"We have made it very clear that this is unacceptable. And we will convey this very directly to our colleagues in the US, who could easily dismiss it as false if it weren’t true," said Mette Frederiksen.

Her remarks underline Denmark’s readiness to defend Greenland’s sovereignty and protect its internal processes from external influence.

Pressure from the US

The discussion was prompted by reports that at least three individuals connected to Trump had traveled to Greenland. They were collecting the names of local residents who might potentially support the idea of the island joining the US.

Sources described the Americans’ actions as "infiltration" and "influence operations" aimed at weakening relations between Copenhagen and Nuuk. Such attempts to interfere in internal processes have caused serious concern in Denmark.

Trump’s position

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has repeatedly emphasized that the United States should take control of Greenland for national and international security reasons. However, this demand was categorically rejected not only by Greenland but also by Denmark, with support from other European countries.

Following Trump’s statements, protests took place in Greenland.

It was also reported that Denmark advised Vance to adjust the tone of his remarks regarding Greenland and called for joint efforts on Arctic security. In addition, Denmark’s foreign minister reminded that Greenland is also part of NATO.

On the eve of these developments, Vance stated that the US will not increase its troop presence in Greenland for now but remains focused on its security.
