UN Security Council needs reform, doubts about its ability to maintain peace – Lithuanian President
The UN Security Council requires reform in light of Russia's war against Ukraine, as there are doubts about its ability to maintain peace, stated Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda on the social network X.
"Lack of multilateral response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has put forward serious doubts about the UN's ability to maintain global peace and security. Significant reforms of the Security Council are clearly needed. The UN must be empowered to stop and contain the aggressors!" Nausėda emphasized.
He also noted that countries must return to supporting Ukraine based on the rules of the international order.
Additionally, the Lithuanian President called on the international community to make greater efforts to limit Russia's ability to continue its colonial war.
Reforming the UN Security Council
In May last year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the UN Security Council needs reform.
Recently, the United States released three proposals for reforming the UN Security Council.
In addition, Finnish President Alexander Stubb recently expressed the need to reform the UN Security Council, suggesting that any member involved in an illegal war should be excluded, including Russia.
Stubb also believes that the number of permanent members should be increased from five to ten, and the veto right should be abolished.
