UN Secretary-General condemns Russia’s attack on Kyiv and calls for immediate ceasefire

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russia’s massive attack on Kyiv on August 28. He also called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
"I condemn the overnight missile & drone attack by Russia on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, which killed and injured many civilians," the UN chief said.
He emphasized that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are unacceptable and must stop immediately.
"I renew my call for a full, immediate & unconditional ceasefire that results in a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace in Ukraine," Guterres added.
Massive attack on Kyiv
On the night of August 28, Russian forces carried out a large-scale combined attack on Kyiv. The Russians targeted the capital with Shahed drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, including Kinzhal missiles.
Yurii Ihnat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, noted that this was one of the heaviest bombardments of the capital.
As a result of the night attack, destruction was recorded across all districts of Kyiv. This marked the first time such widespread damage occurred since the start of the full-scale war.
In particular, in the Darnytskyi district, a missile hit a five-story residential building. One of the entrances was completely destroyed, with the strike hitting the third and fourth floors, causing extensive damage. Currently, 18 people are reported injured.
Additionally, diplomatic institutions were targeted. The building of the European Union mission in Ukraine was damaged.
European Council President António Costa stated that the Russians deliberately damaged the EU’s representation, which supports Ukraine in the war. However, this will not intimidate the European community.
At the same time, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that Russia struck diplomats in direct violation of the Vienna Convention.
