UN ready to join humanitarian aid efforts in Kursk region, but there’s catch
The United Nations (UN) is prepared to join humanitarian aid efforts for civilians in the Kursk region. However, this requires permission from Russia, said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
Dujarric commented on Ukraine's invitation for UN representatives and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to enter Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Kursk region for humanitarian response measures.
He noted that UN representatives are ready to arrive in the Kursk region, but the organizations need Russia’s authorization.
The Red Cross has yet to respond to Ukraine’s invitation.
What happened before
On September 16, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the UN’s involvement in humanitarian response efforts in the Kursk region and sent an official note.
The Ministry also urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to monitor compliance with international humanitarian law on the controlled territories in accordance with the 1949 Geneva Convention.
The Ministry emphasized Ukraine's readiness to cooperate with the UN and ICRC to effectively provide aid to the people of the Kursk region and to monitor the humanitarian situation.
