Nearly 50 UN member states condemned Russia’s intrusion into Polish airspace on the night of September 10. The statement was read by Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki before the start of an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, according to a broadcast on the UN’s YouTube channel.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland reported that, while attacking Ukraine on the night of September 10, Russia carried out 19 drone-type incursions into Polish airspace.

These posed a real threat to civilians, infrastructure, and aviation safety, and were therefore preemptively neutralized.

“For the first time since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion against Ukraine in 2022, Poland's territorial integrity and simultaneously NATO and EU airspace were violated on such an unprecedented and massive scale,” he stated.

Bosacki also recalled that this event occurred after previous instances of Russia violating Polish airspace, which is why Poland decided for the first time to request an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

Poland and the signatory countries called on Russia to immediately cease its aggressive war against Ukraine, refrain from further provocations, and comply with the obligations enshrined in the UN Charter.

In addition to Poland, the statement was signed by most European countries, as well as Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and the US.

Drone attack on Poland

On the night of September 10, Russia carried out a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Some of the drones entered Polish airspace.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that 19 drones were in the airspace that night, and only four of them were successfully shot down.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization, Krzysztof Gawkowski, stated that the Polish government has full evidence that the Russian drone attack on Poland was a planned provocation.

In response to the Russian attack, NATO invoked Article 4. This allows member states to discuss the situation with allies in the North Atlantic Council.
