The United States has reduced its aid to the UN, leading to the suspension of humanitarian assistance in some regions of Ukraine, stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Guterres noted that the significant cuts in US spending on aid, implemented by President Donald Trump, are contrary to Washington's interests.

"The reduction of America’s humanitarian role and influence will run counter to American interests globally. I can only hope that these decisions can be reversed based on more careful reviews, and the same applies to other countries that have recently announced reductions in humanitarian and development aid," he said.

He said that spending cuts have led to the suspension of humanitarian aid in some regions of Ukraine.

"In Ukraine, cash-based programming - a key feature of the humanitarian response, reaching 1 million people in 2024 - has been suspended in key regions," Guterres explained.

The United States cuts spending

Earlier, the Trump administration accused the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which was responsible for foreign aid, of excessive spending.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that foreign aid is not charity and must serve the interests of the United States. The USAID office in Ukraine was also instructed to halt its programs.

Yesterday, the Trump administration announced that it is halting over 90% of foreign aid provided by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
