Summer is the season for light and comfortable clothing, but finding the perfect pair of shorts can be tricky. Many fashion lovers struggle with shorts that chafe, twist, or seem to have a life of their own. On Instagram, Ukrainian stylist Olena Shevchenko explains why this happens and how to choose the right cut, length, and fabric so your shorts are not only comfortable but also flattering.

Many women face a common problem with shorts that constantly ride up between the thighs.

"Do you have this too? You put on shorts, they look great and feel comfy, but after 15 minutes of walking, they're already riding up? You're tugging, pulling, adjusting, and a few steps later, it starts all over again?" the stylist rhetorically asks.

Why do shorts keep riding up between the thighs?

Narrow inseam

Most models aren't designed for the female body, especially if you have curves on the hips or inner thighs.

No allowance for thigh width

The fabric stretches and gets pulled into tight spaces during movement.

Narrow leg opening or too lightweight fabric

Light fabric doesn't hold its shape and gets twisted easily.

Wrong length

If the length ends at the widest part of the thigh, the shorts are guaranteed to "have a life of their own."

How to choose the right shorts for summer 2025

1. Shape

Forget about super-tight shorts that dig in or restrict your movement. The ideal model has a flared leg (A-line shape) that doesn't cling to the thighs. This cut visually elongates the legs and hides problem areas.

2. The right length is key to balance

The length of the shorts should end at the point where the thighs no longer rub against each other. This not only feels better but also looks better. The shorts won't "cut" the leg but rather elongate the silhouette. It also helps prevent chafing in the heat.

3. Fabric and size, no compromises

Choose dense fabrics because they hold their shape better and don't become see-through. The most important thing is fit, not a random S/M label. If you're between sizes, opt for the slightly bigger one: looser shorts always look more polished and stylish than tight ones.

Shorts to avoid:

  • Too short and tight, they look messy and highlight areas you might want to hide
  • Lightweight knit shorts that lose shape after one wash
  • Extremely low waist that shortens the legs and distorts proportions

How to style trendy shorts this summer

For the city: a loose button-up or tucked-in T-shirt, paired with sandals or sneakers
For the office (if the dress code allows): Bermuda shorts, a top, a light blazer, and loafers
For the beach: linen shorts, swimsuit, oversized shirt, and slides. To complete the look, add accessories, such as a woven bag, sunglasses, and jewelry.
