Ukrainian refugees in Scotland could face homelessness after the monthly “thank-you” payment to Scots hosting them was canceled, according to The Daily Mail.

It is estimated that around 28,000 people, mostly women and children, have found shelter in Scotland since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

The previous Conservative government helped them find housing through the Homes for Ukraine program, paying £500 per month as a thank-you to British families willing to host them.

However, the new Labour administration confirmed this month that they are ending the grant, which currently stands at £350 per month, raising concerns that many hosts may ask Ukrainian refugees to leave.

Scottish Conservatives have called this change heartless and short-sighted.

The councils managing this scheme in Scotland now fear it could lead to a surge in homelessness applications to a system already under extreme pressure.

The UK plans to introduce radical changes to its asylum system, including proposals to limit the length of stay for refugees in the country.

RBC-Ukraine also reported that Ireland is reducing the period of free accommodation for Ukrainians and introducing new financial conditions for those who are working.
