Cyber specialists of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence successfully attacked the systems of Russian Gazprombank. The institution is one of the largest banks in Russia, according to RBC-Ukraine's sources in the intelligence services.

As mentioned earlier, Gazprombank ranks among the top three largest banks in Russia. As a result of a large-scale cyberattack on the institution:

  • Hundreds of thousands of Russians were unable to make transfers and online payments.
  • The bank's terminals were blocked across Russia. For example, payment terminals in public transport in Tomsk and Voronezh stopped functioning.
  • The Gazprombank website became inaccessible in France and Germany.
  • The bank's mobile app ceased to function.

Approximately 3 million individuals and about 45,000 legal entities are clients of the institution.

The source also recalled that the United States Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Gazprombank on November 21, 2024.

Cyberattacks against Russia

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine's intelligence hackers have regularly carried out cyberattacks on Russia. The goal of such operations is to disrupt critical infrastructure, expose classified information, and weaken the enemy's military capabilities. For example, intelligence cyber specialists recently successfully attacked the Russian MTS Bank. In September, Rosselkhozbank and PJSC Moscow Credit Bank also suffered from cyberattacks.
