Russia will not be able to destroy the dams of the Kyiv and Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPP) as it did with the Kakhovka HPP, stated CEO of Ukrainian hydroelectric generating company Ukrhydroenergo, Ihor Syrota, in an interview with Forbes.

As Syrota explained, the largest Ukrainian HPPs are almost impossible to destroy from the outside. To achieve this, the enemy would have to fly into Ukrainian territory with aircraft and drop several aerial bombs on them.

"The Kyiv and Kaniv HPPs are located in central Ukraine, far from the front line, making it unlikely for enemy aircraft to get close. This is an extremely improbable scenario. They managed to blow up the Kakhovka HPP from within because it was occupied by them, allowing them to bring in hundreds of kilograms of explosives," he added.

At the same time, the CEO of Ukrhydroenergo noted that if such an event occurred, catastrophic consequences are not expected, as in the worst-case scenario, it would threaten "basement flooding in some areas of Kyiv."

"In the event of significant damage from missiles, the reservoir may be activated, leaving people in nearby settlements without water. But there will be no catastrophic consequences as in the Kherson region. Several missile strikes in one place may create a hole in the dam, allowing water to flow out. At the Kakhovka HPP, almost the entire station and 12 spillway gates were destroyed, resulting in a very large leak. This cannot be achieved with missile strikes," Syrota explained.

What preceded it

Recently, Maria Zakharova, a representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, claimed that Ukraine allegedly intends to destroy the dams of the Kyiv HPP and Kaniv Reservoir.

According to her, Ukraine plans to do this to fabricate a story for the international community, accusing Russia of war crimes and requesting new military assistance from the West.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also responded to Zakharova's statement, rejecting these baseless accusations as absurd.
