Ukrainian Foreign Minister expresses cautious optimism over US approval for strikes on Russia
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha discussed with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken the approval for long-range strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Russian territory. There is "cautious optimism" regarding this issue, according to the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
According to Sybiha, he and Blinken discussed the issue of long-range strikes on military targets in Russia, as well as Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration.
"We are cautiously optimistic about this. Therefore, this meeting is extremely important from all perspectives," the Minister noted.
Approval for long-range strikes on Russian territory
The US and the UK have provided Ukraine with long-range missiles. However, the partners have limited the use of the supplied weapons. Ukraine is not allowed to strike deep into Russian territory with Western missiles.
The partners are concerned that such a step could lead to escalation.
Additionally, the Pentagon recently cited another reason why the US prohibits Ukraine from using ATACMS. Russia has allegedly moved its targets beyond the 300-kilometer range of the provided ATACMS missiles.
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the Biden administration may change its position on strikes deep into Russia using long-range weapons. The next few weeks could be crucial.
