Ukrainian drones hit the important Voronezh-DM radio detection and ranging (radar) located in the Krasnodar Krai of the Russian Federation. It partially monitored the territory of the occupied Crimea, according to Defense Express.

It is noted that yesterday, information about a possible drone attack on Russian radar appeared on the network. And today, photos showing the damage caused by the drones appeared.

Defense Express points out that the strikes hit, in particular, administrative buildings for the personnel and management of this radar.

How the radar is connected with Crimea

The journalists point out that the declared range of targets that Voronezh-DM can detect is up to 6 thousand kilometers. This may include ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as space objects.

The media analyzed the scheme with the viewing areas and found out that the affected radar partially covered the viewing area over the temporarily occupied Crimea.

At the same time, its main viewing vector is the Balkans and the Mediterranean as NATO operational areas, as well as Asia, including the Persian Gulf.

Possible losses for Russia

Defense Express recalled that the Russian Federation claimed to have about 10 deployed Voronezh radars, which differ only in their operating frequency ranges. The one that the Ukrainian troops managed to hit operated in the decimeter-wave range and was capable of tracking up to 500 air targets simultaneously.

Russia also claimed that the construction period for such a radar could have been about 12-18 months, and it could have cost about 1.5 billion rubles.

“However, it's necessary to take into account not only the formal cost figure but also the actual commissioning date - for example, the Voronezh-DM that was hit near Armavir was formally launched in 2009,” the journalists write.

At the same time, in 2017, it was on “experimental combat duty”. This means that the Russian Defense Ministry considered this station to be crude.

Not the first attack on over-the-horizon radar

In April, it was reported that Ukrainian intelligence officers attacked the Russian Container radar in Mordovia. Drones were used for the attack.

The target of the special operation was 29B6 Container over-the-horizon radar. The detection range of the system is 3,000 kilometers and the detection height is 100 kilometers.
