US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the talks between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the White House are seen not as concessions to the Russian dictator, but as a clarification of position, according to the interview with Sid and Friends in the Morning.

“And people have to understand – for President Trump, a meeting is not a concession,” Rubio said.

He noted that many in the news are currently framing this as a victory for Putin, who has emerged from isolation.

“A meeting is what you do to kind of figure out and make your decision. I want to have all the facts. I want to look this guy in the eye. And that’s what the President wants to do,” emphasized the US Secretary of State.

He added that the planned summit is a meeting to clarify positions. Rubio said that sooner or later, everyone will find out whether this approach has a chance for success.

Trump–Putin meeting

Trump said he plans to discuss resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine and urge Putin to cease hostilities.

According to Trump, he hopes to negotiate a territorial exchange between Ukraine and Russia with Putin. However, he promised he would not make any agreement on Ukraine without Kyiv and Moscow doing so first.

Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine will not hand over Donbas to Russia.

It was also revealed that ahead of the Putin meeting, Trump will hold an online conversation with Zelenskyy and other European leaders.
