Blueberries have long been known as a tasty berry and a true superfood. It is a natural "shield" for the heart, brain, and immune system. What makes this berry so unique? Ukrainian endocrinologist and dietitian Kateryna Tolstikova explains the benefits of blueberries.

Why blueberries are healthy

According to the expert, blueberries are the top berries regarding antioxidant levels. They contain a large amount of polyphenols and bioflavonoids — molecules that, when entering the body, neutralize cell damage and fight free radicals.

"That means blueberries become a powerful antioxidant and anti-aging product to delay the aging of the body and reduce inflammation," said the dietitian of Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk.

Blueberries are often recommended to support eye health. They can improve night vision and reduce eye strain, especially during screen work.

Regular consumption of blueberries also helps lower "bad" cholesterol, normalizes blood pressure, and improves the elasticity of blood vessels.

In addition, the berry improves memory, concentration, and cognitive functions, and may reduce the risk of age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Who should not eat the berry

Blueberries are very healthy, but there are situations when their consumption may be undesirable or limited. Here is who is advised not to eat blueberries or to consume them with caution:

  • People with allergies: although rare, blueberries can cause allergic reactions: rashes, itching, swelling, and breathing difficulties
  • People prone to constipation: blueberries (especially dried ones) have an astringent effect, which can worsen constipation
  • People with kidney stones: blueberries contain oxalic acid, which can contribute to the formation of oxalate kidney stones
  • People with low blood pressure (hypotension): blueberries can lower blood pressure, so those with consistently low pressure should consume them carefully
  • If you have diabetes: although blueberries have a low glycemic index, they still contain sugars in large amounts; consumption volume should be controlled, and glucose levels monitored
  • During anticoagulant therapy: blueberries contain vitamin K, which affects blood clotting, so they should be avoided or limited when taking blood-thinning medications
