Slovakia will provide emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine in the event of a blackout, according to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Denys Shmyhal.

"We want Ukraine to get through the winter with dignity. In the case of a blackout, we will supply emergency energy," Fico said.

He also emphasized that Slovakia supports Ukraine's integration into the EU's unified energy system.

"At the upcoming European summit, we want to propose a systematic solution to support Ukraine’s energy system. We understand that a significant part of your energy infrastructure has been destroyed, but we want to ensure this is addressed. The EU has a single energy market, and it needs to extend to you as well," he said.

Fico also mentioned that Slovakia is preparing a new package of humanitarian aid for Ukraine, although it will not include lethal weapons. Instead, the package will focus on supporting Ukraine’s energy system.

Preparation for heating season

Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has carried out approximately 10 large-scale attacks on Ukraine's energy system, destroying more than 80% of its generating capacity. This has led to emergency and planned power outages. Despite the launch of two nuclear power plant units in July, new strikes in August caused further disruptions.

Although the situation stabilized in September, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has warned of potential new Russian attacks.
