Ukraine's attacks on Crimea and the Kerch Strait crossing on June 20 hit Russian air defenses, fuel storage facilities, and three car ferries, further deepening supply problems on the peninsula, UK Ministry of Defence reports.

According to British intelligence, disabling three ferries at a time when fighting over the southern land corridor to Crimea is ongoing has "almost certainly" worsened supply disruptions on the peninsula.

The report notes that widespread fuel shortages and delays at crossing points are currently being recorded there.

Why ferries are critical for Russia

The UK defense analysis recalls that security protocols introduced after the first Ukrainian strike on the Crimean Bridge in October 2022 have restricted its use.

Trucks can only be transported by ferry, not across the bridge. The bridge is used only by passenger cars, buses, and a portion of rail transport.

Based on intelligence assessments, in March and April 2026, Ukraine also struck two other rail ferries that supported military logistics. The ministry believes these ferries are now "almost certainly" under repair.

Logistics, air defenses under sustained pressure

The UK Ministry of Defence notes that Ukraine is increasingly targeting Russian military logistics networks in occupied territories. This has been made possible by the expansion of its arsenal, including one-way strike drones and stand-off munitions.

Intelligence assessments suggest that the breadth of targets is weakening Russian air defenses even in priority and heavily fortified areas such as the Kerch Strait.

This, in turn, "increases Ukraine's options for attacking the Crimean Bridge, a strategic and politically-sensitive target opened by President Putin."

Recently, Ukrainian forces carried out a series of large-scale strikes on Crimea, hitting gas facilities, oil terminals, air defense systems, and logistics infrastructure.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has noted that strikes on bridges have disrupted land routes to Crimea and complicate Russia's preparations for offensive operations.
