Ukraine uses AI to find battlefield targets, cutting analysis time by up to 90%

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense explained how artificial intelligence is improving the effectiveness of strikes on enemy targets by the Defense Forces, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
It is noted that artificial intelligence is already saving Ukrainian Defense Forces analysts up to 90% of their time at the stage of detecting signs of enemy presence in photos and videos by independently analyzing them and identifying enemy positions and equipment.
Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the important tools providing a technological advantage over the enemy, in particular by enabling faster responses to threats.
At the same time, Ukraine systematically follows the human-in-the-loop principle when using AI. This means that the technology helps detect a target and speeds up its assessment, but the final decision to strike remains with a human.
It is also important to note that the use of AI significantly speeds up the kill chain as a whole, meaning the chain of engaging an enemy target — from its detection to assessing the result.
Artificial intelligence and machine vision technologies are increasingly being used in unmanned systems of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. These technologies help the military with navigation, object recognition, and guiding drones toward targets.
According to the Defense Ministry, more than 200 companies in Ukraine are currently producing drones using AI. At the same time, 46 artificial intelligence developments are available to the military on the state-run Brave1 Market defense technology marketplace.
These include target recognition, optical stabilization, and automatic terminal guidance modules. The Defense Ministry has set a goal for 100% of drones on the front line to eventually be equipped with machine vision and artificial intelligence technologies.
