Ukraine expects concrete steps from the UN Security Council to stop Russian aggression and force Moscow into a just and lasting peace, according to the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN on Facebook.

"We expect from the UN Security Council not only another condemnation of Russian war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine, but very concrete steps to stop Russian aggression and force Moscow into a just and lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter," said Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk.

He also thanked the members of the UN Security Council that immediately supported Ukraine’s request, namely the United Kingdom, Greece, Denmark, Latvia, Liberia, and France.

Melnyk recalled that the UN Security Council will convene on Monday, January 12, at 3:00 p.m. for an emergency meeting at Ukraine’s request following the latest Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and the country’s energy infrastructure.

Russia's Oreshnik strike

According to Russia's Defense Ministry, on the night of January 8 to 9, Russia allegedly used an Oreshnik missile against targets in western Ukraine "in response to a terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime" in late December.

The Ukrainian side described these claims as yet another information manipulation by the Kremlin.

Later, the use of the Russian Oreshnik missile was confirmed by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Subsequently, Reuters reported that the missile struck a facility near the border with Poland.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Kyiv is initiating urgent consultations not only at the UN Security Council, but also within the Ukraine-NATO, EU, Council of Europe, and OSCE formats in connection with Russia’s statements about the use of a medium-range ballistic missile against Lviv region.
