Ukraine is requesting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following Russia's massive missile attacks on civilian cities, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
What the foreign minister said
"Every Russian missile launched against Ukraine carries a message far beyond our borders. It seeks to convince the world that violence can replace law, that fear is stronger than solidarity, and that brutality comes without consequence," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.
According to him, Ukraine is calling on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, and all Council members to support the request.
The minister stressed that delays or weak responses cannot stop terror, and that only decisive and timely action can do so.
"The international community must stand united to deter the aggressor and continue advancing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in line with the UN Charter," Sybiha added.
Overnight attack on Ukraine: What is known so far
As previously reported, Russia attacked Ukraine overnight on July 6 with 419 aerial attack weapons, including 68 missiles of various types and 351 attack drones. Kyiv was the primary target, while Ukraine's air defenses destroyed or suppressed 363 incoming targets.
At the same time, Ukraine failed to intercept any ballistic missiles. An Air Force spokesperson said this was due to a shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
According to him, the interception rate for cruise missiles was close to 100%, while the results against ballistic missiles were significantly worse.
As RBC-Ukraine previously reported, Russian strikes destroyed parts of residential buildings in Kyiv's Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts, leaving people dead and injured.
In the town of Vyshneve in the Kyiv region, more than 500 residents were temporarily evacuated because of a fire and the risk of a secondary explosion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on NATO partners to make strong decisions on protecting Ukraine's skies, noting that interceptor missiles for Patriot systems remain in allied stockpiles.
