Ukraine unveils new Perimeter system to monitor positions without human sentries

Engineers from the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) have developed their own Perimeter sector surveillance system, replacing soldiers who previously had to physically stand watch at frontline positions, according to the Active Discussion podcast.
The system was presented by an engineer from the Wings unit, known by the callsign Osaka. He said developers aimed to make the system as simple, inexpensive, and easy to replace as possible—using components that can be purchased at virtually any local electronics market.
How Perimeter works
The system is equipped with two cameras. The first is a daytime or day-and-dusk camera that can still display object outlines after sunset, even in very low light. The second is an infrared thermal imaging camera used to detect heat signatures.
The engineer notes that the device is nearly invisible to enemy thermal imaging systems, especially during the summer foliage season, when the camera blends in with tree bark.
Autonomy and deployment
The Perimeter system is waterproof and can operate for at least 24 hours on two batteries without recharging. The cameras are mounted when a position is established, while the battery pack is kept inside a dugout.
"Once the camera is installed, it stays there for months, and no one has to go back to it," Osaka explained.
Now, the system is used only for real-time surveillance and does not record video. According to the developers, that feature was deliberately omitted to keep the system as affordable as possible.

How much system costs
HUR engineer says the Perimeter system costs about 60,000 hryvnias (roughly $1,340). Of that amount, the camera accounts for around 30,000 hryvnias (roughly $670), while the two batteries included with the system cost nearly 10,000 hryvnias (roughly $220).
As previously reported, Ukrainian military units are increasingly deploying unmanned systems and continuous battlefield surveillance to detect enemy forces more quickly while reducing risks to personnel.
Earlier, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine also showcased other in-house developments, including sea drone carriers used to strike targets in the waters off occupied Crimea and Russian boats in the Black Sea.
