Ukraine under heavy missile attack: Details
Russian forces launched a combined aerial attack on November 17, firing various types of missiles and kamikaze drones at Ukraine. Explosions were reported in several regions, and a fire broke out in Kyiv as a result of the shelling.
Where explosions reported
During a Russian missile attack, explosions first occurred in Kyiv. Kyiv officials reported the activation of air defense systems. Later, a series of additional explosions followed in the capital, where fighting continued as forces repelled the attack.
Explosions were also heard in Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, Pavlohrad, Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv, Rivne, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
Aftermath of Kyiv
A fire broke out in a residential building in the Pechersk district of Kyiv. A woman was injured and hospitalized after a piece of drone debris struck the building where she was located.
Later, the mayor of Kyiv informed that in the building in Pechersk, where one woman was hospitalized, another injured woman was provided with medical assistance on the spot.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko clarified that in the Holosiivskyi district, a missile fragment fell near the Silpo supermarket.
In the Desnianskyi district, drone debris landed in an open area and on the roof of an unfinished building. On Rusanivka, drone fragments fell in a park and into a body of water.
Preliminary reports indicate no casualties.
Mykolaiv
Local authorities reported that the Russians attacked the residential sector in Mykolaiv. The shelling caused damage.
According to the city's mayor, two people have been confirmed dead, and six others are injured.
Rivne
The mayor of Rivne, Oleksandr Tretyak, reported that the occupiers launched a missile strike on the city.
In Rivne, residents were later warned about the possibility of temporary water supply interruptions. The Rivneoblvodokanal urged city residents, if possible, to stock up on water.
Lviv region
In Lviv region, a fire broke out due to the attack. According to the head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, in the Chervonohrad (Sheptytskyi) district, garages and a car caught fire after enemy rocket debris fell.
Strike on Ukraine's energy sector
According to Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, Russia is currently targeting electricity generation and transmission facilities across Ukraine.
In a post on Facebook, he stated that the transmission system operator had urgently implemented emergency power outages.
"A massive attack on the energy system is underway... Where possible, rescuers and energy workers are already working to mitigate the consequences," the official added.
Ukraine implements emergency power outages
Due to a massive missile attack by the enemy, emergency power outages have been introduced in certain regions and cities. According to Yasno, the decision was made to preserve Ukraine's energy system.
Emergency outages have been implemented in:
- Kyiv and Kyiv region
- Dnipropetrovsk region
- Donetsk region
- Cherkasy region
- Some districts of Odesa
- Kirovohrad region
- Zhytomyr region
In addition, power outages are reported in Odesa and Khmelnytskyi.
Additionally, all-electric transport in Odesa is not operating.
How Russia attacks Ukraine
The launch of missiles from Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers towards Ukraine was recorded at 5:42 AM (Kiyv time). Monitoring groups reported that the number of aircraft involved was 17, though it remains unclear whether all enemy aircraft carried out missile strikes.
Additionally, since the evening, strike drones – likely of the Shahed type – were detected in Ukraine's airspace. Russians launched them in multiple groups and waves throughout the night.
By the morning, reports of launches of Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea emerged. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Navy informed that four Russian missile carriers were in the Black Sea, with a total of up to 24 Kalibr missiles ready to be launched.
Later, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine issued a warning about the threat of ballistic missiles from the temporarily occupied Feodosia in Crimea.
A ballistic missile launch towards Kropyvnytskyi was recorded, as well as a cruise missile launch towards Kyiv. The Ukrainian military also reported the movement of missiles toward several regions.
The Air Force later confirmed launches of air-launched ballistic Kinzhal missiles from Tambov, Russia, towards Ukraine. These missiles were specifically heading towards Kharkiv, Kremenchuk, and Kyiv.
Poland deploys aviation
Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command reported that, in response to the massive Russian missile strike on Ukrainian territory using cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as UAVs, the Polish military command has deployed both domestic and allied aircraft.
