Ukraine to receive new aid from Croatia under SAFE mechanism, says Zelenskyy

Croatia will provide new assistance to Ukrainian defenders under the SAFE mechanism, stated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to the head of the Ukrainian state, he held a conversation with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. Zelenskyy congratulated the Croatian people on Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day.
The President stated that he informed the Croatian Prime Minister about the situation on the front lines, the increase in Russian strikes on civilians, and Ukraine’s cooperation with partners to strengthen the Armed Forces. In particular, the two sides discussed a new mechanism through which European countries purchase American weapons for Ukrainian soldiers.
"We also talked about the SAFE mechanism and the opportunities it provides to bolster defense capabilities, including for Ukraine. Croatia will contribute its share to support our soldiers. Thank you!" Zelenskyy added.
SAFE mechanism
The SAFE mechanism (Security Action for Europe) is a new financial initiative of the European Union, adopted on May 27, 2025, aimed at strengthening the defense industry and enhancing the EU’s readiness to protect its interests.
Under SAFE, up to 150 billion euros will be provided in the form of long-term loans to EU member states, Ukraine, and other partners interested in joint defense projects.
The SAFE initiative also allows EU countries to order weapons from Ukrainian enterprises.
As of September last year, Croatia had provided Ukraine with assistance totaling 200 million euros.
