Ukraine to receive 40 more Marder infantry fighting vehicles
The German federal government has commissioned the company Rheinmetall to deliver 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. The order was placed in August 2023 and is valued at tens of millions of euros, according to Rheinmetall.
"Rheinmetall is actively working on the existing machines to ensure that the new batch of Marder vehicles can be delivered according to the contract in 2023," the statement said.
Thanks to this order, the total number of Marder vehicles to be supplied to Ukraine by Rheinmetall will increase to 80.
In March 2023, the company had already produced the first 20 armored personnel carriers for Ukraine on behalf of the federal government. Another 20 Rheinmetall armored personnel carriers were commissioned in June 2023 and recently delivered to Ukraine.
These armored personnel carriers are upgraded Marder 1A3 models, previously used by the Bundeswehr. In the spring of 2022, Rheinmetall began modernizing these armored personnel carriers at their own expense to bring them into immediate combat readiness.
Work on the Marder infantry fighting vehicle is currently taking place at Rheinmetall facilities in Unterlüß and Kassel. Up to ten armored personnel carriers can be delivered per month.
The Marder infantry fighting vehicle, originally developed for the Bundeswehr and still in use there, is one of the most proven weapon systems of its kind in the world. Over the course of its service life, the vehicle has undergone several upgrades and improvements in its combat capabilities.
