On Ukraine's southwestern border, particularly in the Transnistria sector, defensive capabilities are being strengthened due to potential risks and the presence of Russian military forces there, according to the West Operational Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
They reported that engineering fortifications are being reinforced in the Transnistria sector, and bypass roads are being developed to improve troop maneuverability and logistics.
The Operational Command notes that the commander of the West military group, Brigadier General Volodymyr Shvediuk, during a working trip to the border with unrecognized Transnistria, spoke with commanders at various levels, checked the readiness of units, their supplies, and the condition of the defensive lines, engineering fortifications, and bypass roads.
The Operational Command notes that it plans to create a layered defense system in this area, which will allow for a rapid response to possible provocations or threats from the Transnistrian region.

"One of the main issues remains the substantial strengthening of the defensive capabilities of our southwestern border. Creating the necessary conditions to improve the maneuverability and logistical support of the troops. This will allow us to build a layered defense system capable of responding promptly to any provocations or overt acts of aggression from the self-proclaimed, unrecognized satellite of Russia," the West Operational Command states.
It clarifies that Ukrainian military personnel in this area are actively interacting with local communities and farms. They are ensuring that farmers can safely carry out seasonal fieldwork, taking into account the construction of engineering barriers, minefields, and defense lines by our troops along the border.
Ukrainian Defense Forces units are also supporting efforts to improve the system for training the residents in civil resistance.
The commander of the West military group also met with representatives of the region’s medical institutions to assess the readiness of the region’s medical infrastructure to assist the military if necessary.
"Strengthening the defensive lines along the border is, first and foremost, a comprehensive response to potential risks and the ability to react quickly to any threat," the West Operational Command notes.
And although the scenarios for how events might unfold here may vary, the experience of repelling Russian armed aggression in the northern and eastern sectors of Ukraine shows that we must be prepared for all possible scenarios. And we must respond to them adequately and effectively, the Command concludes.
Transnistria in Russia's war against Ukraine
Transnistria is a region under the control of the self-proclaimed and unrecognized Transnistrian People’s Republic (TPR). This separatist enclave emerged as a result of the armed conflict in the early 1990s, when local militants, with direct support from Russian troops, rose against the Republic of Moldova.
The official Russian contingent there numbers about 1,500–1,700 troops, and together with local armed groups, this figure reaches 7,000–8,000 people.

In the context of the war, the region poses a constant threat along the southwestern border, forcing Ukraine to station troops there to provide cover and prevent provocations.
In April 2026, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Brigadier General Pavlo Palisa, stated that Russia is considering the creation of a new buffer zone along the border with Ukraine, in the Vinnytsia region on the side of unrecognized Transnistria.
