Ukraine strongly condemns the actions of Hungary, which imposed sanctions against three Ukrainian generals. Kyiv considers Budapest’s move a sign of disrespect toward the Armed Forces of Ukraine and reserves the right to take reciprocal measures, stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Sybiha said that Ukraine condemns Hungary's decision. He called it "unfounded and absurd."

"We reject Hungary's manipulations, and we will not tolerate such disrespect for our military. Ukraine reserves the right to take appropriate action in response," Sybiha emphasized.

Hungarian fake about the beating of a draft-age man

On July 10, Hungarian authorities claimed that in Ukraine's Zakarpattia region, officers from a military recruitment center beat a Hungarian citizen to death. The allegation was made by Levente Magyar, a deputy foreign minister and ally of Hungary’s pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

In response, Ukraine’s Ground Forces stated that the claim is false. The mobilized soldier in question, József Sebestyén, died in the hospital due to a pulmonary artery thromboembolism.

Despite this, Hungary continued spreading disinformation and demanded that the European Union impose sanctions against Ukrainian officers. Acting on its own, Budapest went further and imposed unilateral sanctions against three Ukrainians:

  • Colonel Vitalii Tkachenko from the Ground Forces command staff

  • Brigadier General Volodymyr Shvediuk of Operational Command West

  • Colonel Roman Yuzvenko from the Defense Ministry’s mobilization department
