US and Russian officials to meet in Saudi Arabia to begin Ukraine talks. The meeting is set to take place in the coming days, according to Reuters.
The publication reports that the negotiations will aim "at ending Moscow's nearly three-year war in Ukraine." This was shared with journalists on Saturday, February 15, by a US lawmaker and a source familiar with the plans.
In addition, US representative Michael McCaul told Reuters that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and White House Special Representative for the Middle East Steve Vitkoff will travel to Saudi Arabia.
"It was not immediately clear who they would meet from Russia," the article states.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, McCaul stated that the goal of the talks is to organize a meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "to finally bring peace and end this conflict."
A source familiar with the plans confirmed the scheduled negotiations between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia.
US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia
On February 15, Politico reported that the team of US President Donald Trump would initiate Russian-Ukrainian peace talks in Saudi Arabia. Previously, Bloomberg wrote that a meeting of Russian and US delegations on this matter would take place in Saudi Arabia next week.
Furthermore, on February 14, it was reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would visit Saudi Arabia and Turkey. However, a meeting with the Russians was ruled out.
President Zelenskyy, who met with US Vice President JD Vance in Germany on Friday, also stated that Ukraine had not been invited to the negotiations in Saudi Arabia and that Kyiv would not engage with Moscow without consultations with its strategic partners.
