During the first meeting with the new Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, an agreement was reached to expand defense cooperation between the countries, and the Drone Deal agreement was signed, according to a post by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Telegram.

During the first meeting with the new Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, Ukraine and Latvia signed the Drone Deal agreement. The document became an important outcome of the negotiations and is aimed at strengthening joint defense and developing co-production.

It is noted that the agreement covers not only practical security cooperation but also the transfer of Ukrainian experience and technologies to partners.

Expansion of the defense partnership

Latvia has become the sixth country to join the Drone Deal initiative. In this way, an expanded network of long-term defense partnerships is being formed, based on technological exchange, shared interests, and mutual support.

Within the framework of the initiative, the development of defense innovation, the training of specialists, and the implementation of new technological solutions to strengthen the defense capabilities of both countries are envisaged.

Development of air defense and practical cooperation

During the meeting, the sides discussed further development of practical cooperation, including strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems. The discussion also covered the needs of Ukrainian air defense and ways to reinforce them through partner support.

Sanctions policy and support for Ukraine

Special attention was paid to sanctions policy against Russia, in particular the strengthening of restrictions on the so-called shadow fleet.

Ukraine emphasized the importance of systematic support from Latvia and expressed gratitude for its consistent assistance amid the ongoing war.

On May 13, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, during which the leaders signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of defense expertise and defense industry in the Drone Deal format.

About a year ago, Ukraine proposed a large-scale agreement with the United States in the field of drone technologies, estimated at up to $50 billion. The project envisaged the export of Ukrainian developments and the organization of joint drone production, but no official decision has yet been made by the American side regarding this initiative.
