Ukraine has officially severed diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua. The reason is the country’s recognition of Russia’s "sovereignty" over temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced this on Twitter (X).

"This decision comes in response to Nicaragua’s recognition of Russia’s so-called 'sovereignty' over temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson regions, and Crimea," Sybiha explained.

He emphasized that Ukraine views this decision as a deliberate attempt to undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity, a gross violation of the Constitution, the UN Charter, and the fundamental norms and principles of international law.

"By aligning itself politically with the aggressor state, seeking to legitimize the violent seizure of Ukrainian land, and opening the so-called 'honorary consulate' in Russia-occupied Crimea, Nicaragua has become an accomplice to Russia’s crime of aggression against Ukraine," the minister said.

According to him, Nicaragua’s "recognition" of the Russian occupation is legally invalid.

"It does not and will never alter the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine. Ukraine will continue to respond resolutely to any attempts to undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Sybiha stressed.

Nicaragua recognizes the occupied Ukrainian territories as Russian

Back in July, the media reported that the Nicaraguan government recognized the temporarily occupied territories of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions as part of Russia. The corresponding letter was sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin by his long-time ally and accomplice, Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately responded to this information.

The ministry stated that Ukraine considers the Nicaraguan president’s announcement of willingness to recognize temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories as belonging to Russia unacceptable.

The MFA emphasized that Nicaragua should retract its statement, or later not complain about the consequences.

However, Nicaragua went ahead and recognized the occupied Ukrainian territories as Russian.
