National Security Council head Rustem Umerov held a meeting with European and US representatives to review the first day of talks in Geneva and agree on further coordination, according to the NSC (National Security Council) chief’s Telegram.
“I concluded a separate meeting with representatives from the US and European partners - France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland,” Umerov wrote.
During the discussion, the parties reviewed the outcomes of the first round of peace talks in Geneva and aligned on next steps.
“It is important to maintain a shared vision and coordinate actions between Ukraine, the US, and Europe. There is an understanding of our joint responsibility for the outcome. We continue to work together,” added the NSC Secretary.
Geneva talks
On February 17–18, a new round of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine began in Geneva. Representatives from the US, Russia, and Ukraine sat at the negotiating table to try to resolve outstanding points of the peace plan.
Moscow renewed its delegation for the talks and this time included, among others, Kremlin associate Vladimir Medinsky, who has earned a controversial reputation in political circles. Medinsky also participated in earlier peace efforts in Istanbul, but those efforts failed.
He is criticized for spreading Kremlin narratives, talking about Rus’ and the Rurik dynasty, and, most importantly, for the lack of tangible results.
Ukraine’s delegation head, Rustem Umerov, said regarding the first day of talks on February 17 that the Ukrainian team is working constructively, focused, and without unnecessary expectations.
The dialogue among Ukraine, the US, and Russia is expected to continue in Geneva on February 18, with a focus on conflict resolution.
