Ukraine's President invited to EU leaders' summit

President of the European Council Antonio Costa invited EU leaders to attend a special meeting of the European Council in Brussels on March 6. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also received the invitation, according to the invitation letter from the President of the European Council.
“I would like to invite you to a Special European Council on 6 March, which will be dedicated to European Defense and to Ukraine. I have invited President Zelenskyy to come to Brussels on the occasion of the meeting of the European Council to discuss with us the latest developments,” the document reads.
According to him, the main goal will be to continue the discussion that was launched during their informal meeting on February 3. It should allow European leaders to take quick decisions that should make Europe more sovereign, more capable, and better equipped to meet immediate and future security challenges.
“It is therefore important for us to exchange on how to further support Ukraine and on the principles that should be respected going forward. The EU and its member states are ready to take more responsibility for Europe’s security. We should therefore be prepared for a possible European contribution to the security guarantees that will be necessary to ensure a lasting peace in Ukraine,” Costa wrote.
The meeting will begin with the traditional communication between the EU leaders and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. This will be followed by a business lunch with Zelenskyy. After that, the heads of state and government of the European countries will hold an in-depth discussion on European defense and Ukraine.
“I look forward to our meeting on 6 March,” the President of the European Council added.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that Ukraine and Europe should be at the negotiating table so that “the need for peace is not again silenced by promises of normalization, reset or reconciliation.”
