Ukraine's NATO membership faces increasing opposition in Europe
Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Xavier Bettel, has expressed opposition to Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), reports Spiegel.
During a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels on December 3, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Xavier Bettel, did not support the idea of Ukraine joining the Alliance.
"I believe that Nato membership will bring tension again," he said.
According to the Luxembourg Foreign Minister, membership in a country that has been attacked by Russia could immediately lead to further conflicts.
Instead, the minister expressed support for Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
Ukraine's partnership with NATO
A meeting of NATO foreign ministers is taking place at the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels on December 3-4, with one of the key topics being Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated at the meeting that before starting potential peace negotiations with Russia, the West must help Ukraine establish a strong position.
The Secretary-General also announced a three-point plan to assist Ukraine, although it does not include membership for the country in the Alliance.
In contrast, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is convinced that NATO membership for Ukraine could bring an end to the active phase of the war.
Ukraine's accession to the defensive alliance is only possible with the agreement of all 32 current member states. Previously, the US, Germany, and Hungary also opposed Ukraine's membership in the Alliance.
