Russia violated the ceasefire initiated by Ukraine from midnight on May 5 to 6. Its fake calls for a truce on May 9 have nothing to do with diplomacy, says Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
Sybiha noted that Russians attacked Ukraine with 108 drones and 3 missiles throughout the night, including morning strikes on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.
Moscow once again ignored a realistic and fair call to cease hostilities, supported by other states and international organizations.
“This shows that Russia rejects peace and its fake calls for a ceasefire on May 9th have nothing to do with diplomacy. Putin only cares about military parades, not human lives,” the minister stressed.
According to Sybiha, such a position requires increased pressure on the Russian regime, including new rounds of sanctions, isolation, accountability for Russian crimes, and expanded support for Ukraine in all areas.
Ukraine-Russia ceasefire
Recently, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced an order by Russian president Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire with Ukraine on May 8–9 in honor of Victory Day.
Moscow took this step without coordination with Kyiv. Separately, Russia threatened that if the celebrations are disrupted by attacks, the center of the Ukrainian capital “will be hit by a massive missile strike.”
In response to this initiative, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is declaring a ceasefire with Russia starting at midnight between May 5 and 6.
According to him, Ukrainian forces will act symmetrically.
However, during the night and morning of May 6, Russians attacked several Ukrainian cities, thereby violating the ceasefire.
