Ukraine's MFA condemns use of force against protests in Georgia
Ukraine condemns the violent dispersal of a peaceful protest in Tbilisi and expresses disappointment with the Georgian government's decision to suspend negotiations on joining the European Union (EU) until 2028, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
"Ukraine strongly condemns the use of force against a peaceful protest in Tbilisi. We urge the Georgian authorities to respect the right of Georgian citizens to peaceful protest and refrain from violence and provocations," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
The Ministry added that the escalation of the internal political situation in Georgia stems from numerous violations during the parliamentary elections on October 26. These violations must be investigated, and those responsible held accountable.
Kyiv also expressed disappointment with Tbilisi's decision to suspend EU accession negotiations until 2028.
"This decision, along with the use of force against a peaceful protest, demonstrates a rollback of democratic processes in the country to appease Moscow. It is no coincidence that the Georgian leadership has already received public praise from the Kremlin for actions contrary to the European aspirations of its people," the Ministry noted.
Ukraine calls on Georgia to respect the aspirations of the majority of its people to be part of Europe and to return to implementing the reforms necessary for EU membership.
Protests in Georgia
On Thursday, November 28, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the country does not plan to start negotiations on joining the European Union, postponing the process until the end of 2028.
Additionally, the Georgian government rejected any financial support from the EU, with Kobakhidze calling EU grants and loans a means of exerting pressure on Georgia.
Following this statement, protests erupted in the country's capital, Tbilisi, accompanied by clashes. During an attempt by law enforcement to disperse the demonstration, detentions occurred, and injuries were reported.
Dozens of Georgian diplomats expressed disagreement with the decision to halt the European integration process.
