WTA 1000, Beijing, 3rd round
Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) def. Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6:4, 6:2
Match details
The Belarusian had sensationally knocked out former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in the previous round, but she could not beat the Ukrainian.
The first set was tough for Kostyuk. She almost lost her opening service game. However, at 3-3, the Ukrainian broke serve and went on to take the set 6-4.
In the second set, Kostyuk fully controlled the match, winning five games in a row and closing out the set 6-2.
What's next
Kostyuk is now the only Ukrainian remaining in the singles draw at the China Open.
Ukraine's No. 1 Elina Svitolina withdrew from the tournament, announcing an early end to her season. Yuliia Starodubtseva and Dayana Yastremska were eliminated in their opening matches.
This marks the sixth time in 2025 that Marta has reached the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event. She previously advanced through this stage in Montreal, Madrid, and Doha.
In her next match, Kostyuk will face either American Jessica Pegula or Brit Emma Raducanu.
