Russia seeks to monopolize the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, but Ukraine's role in that victory must not be forgotten, stated Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi during a briefing.

Tykhyi responded to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's announcement that he had accepted an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Moscow on May 9.

"The Kremlin's aggression against Ukraine has trampled on the shared memory of the fight against Nazism in World War II," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

He added that Ukraine took an active part in the victory over Nazism, and its role should not be underestimated. Russia has spent years attempting to appropriate this victory, which is an insult to millions of Ukrainians who lost their loved ones during the war.

"This insult was inflicted long ago by Putin, but we urge our partners and European leaders to recall the facts. Total losses in the war are estimated at 50 to 75 million people, with 8 to 10 million Ukrainians among the dead - nearly a quarter of Ukraine's population at the time," Tykhyi noted.

He highlighted that by 1943, almost every soldier in the Red Army was of Ukrainian origin.

"So we have to ask, what kind of celebration is it that takes place only in Moscow while ignoring Ukraine’s role in World War II? Perhaps a visit to Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, or Kyiv would be more fitting - cities that bore the brunt of the war, first from west to east and then from east to west," Tykhyi suggested, addressing Fico.

Fico's plans

Earlier, the Slovak Prime Minister, who holds a pro-Russian position, stated that his government is committed to the legacy of the fight against fascism and the role played by the Red Army in this struggle.

According to Fico, he is interested in participating in the celebrations that will take place on May 9, 2025, in Moscow,
