Slovak PM to visit Moscow for Victory Day celebration with Putin
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that he "gladly" accepted an invitation from Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit Moscow. He plans to travel there in May 2025, Aktuality reports.
According to the publication, Fico could become the first Slovak representative to visit Russia officially since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Fico emphasized the role of the Red Army and the Soviet Union in defeating fascism and winning the world war. He stated that Slovak citizens "respectfully commemorate all anniversaries and events linked to the liberation of our territory by the Red Army in 1944-1945."
He also affirmed that the Slovak government supports the legacy of the fight against fascism and the "historical truth" about World War II and the role of the Red Army.
"In 2025, the Slovak government will take responsibility for organizing several events, culminating in the May celebrations of victory over fascism. In line with the above, it is natural that I, as Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, am very interested in participating in the official celebrations marking the victory over fascism, which will take place on May 9, 2025, in Moscow. Therefore, I gladly accepted the official invitation from the President of the Russian Federation, V. Putin, to attend these important celebrations, which I will do," Fico stated.
Slovakia's position on Ukraine
Robert Fico took office as Slovakia's Prime Minister last fall. At the time, he announced plans to halt military support for Ukraine and block its NATO membership, promoting pro-Russian rhetoric and describing the war as a "frozen conflict."
This fall, Fico stated that Slovakia would resume cooperation with Russia immediately after the war in Ukraine ends.
