Fico reveals when Slovakia will resume cooperation with Russia
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that he would restore cooperation with Russia. This will happen immediately after the war in Ukraine ends, according to Politico.
The agency reports that Fico intends to continue purchasing Russian gas and oil and to maintain existing transit routes through Ukraine. He also promised to restore relations with Russia if the war in Ukraine ends during his term as leader.
"If the war ends during the mandate of this government (2023-2027 - ed.), I'll do everything possible for the renewal of economic and standard relations with Russia," he said at a press conference.
These statements were made ahead of a joint meeting of the governments of Slovakia and Ukraine, where Bratislava aims to persuade Kyiv to remain a transit country for Russian gas.
Sanctions against Lukoil
In July, Hungary and Slovakia suspended oil supplies due to Ukraine's sanctions against Lukoil. Kyiv claims that supply volumes remain unchanged through other Russian companies. Hungary and Slovakia have appealed to the European Commission regarding a trade agreement with Ukraine, while Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal called their reaction politicized.
