Ukraine’s Third Army Corps has turned Soviet-era BTR-60 armored personnel carriers into giant kamikaze drones that were used to destroy Russian fortifications, according to the Third Army Corps.
"To break through the enemy's defenses, the Third Army Corps used its own invention — Soviet BTR-60s converted into robotic kamikaze systems. They were used to blow up the enemy's strongest fortifications," said Corps Commander Andrii Biletskyi.
According to him, the improvised strike unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) helped break through Russian defenses in the most heavily fortified areas.
What is known about the BTR-60
The BTR-60 is a Soviet wheeled armored personnel carrier developed in 1956-1959 to equip motorized rifle units and replace the outdated BTR-152.
The armored personnel carrier was mass-produced from 1960 to 1976 at the Gorky Automobile Plant, and later at the Kurgan Wheel Tractor Plant until 1987. According to various estimates, between 10,000 and 25,000 vehicles were produced.
Operation Vivaldi
In September, the Third Army Corps launched the Vivaldi offensive operation in the northern Donetsk region. Ukrainian forces have been gradually clearing and liberating settlements.
In particular, Ukrainian troops drove Russian forces out of the settlement of Serednie without suffering any losses, completely clearing the area and taking control of the settlement.
It was also previously reported that Ukrainian forces had managed to liberate an area larger than Zhytomyr. During the fighting, Ukrainian troops eliminated concealed Russian forces and established a bridgehead for a further offensive in the region.
We also reported that the Third Army Corps used a new tactic during Operation Vivaldi, deploying upgraded ground robots equipped with grenade launchers to attack Russian positions without direct infantry involvement.
