Ukraine's Forces assess risk of encirclement of Velyka Novosilka, Donetsk region

Currently, there is no risk of the town of Velyka Novosilka in the Donetsk region being surrounded by Russian forces. However, heavy fighting is ongoing there, according to the spokesperson for the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Grouping of Troops, Viktor Trehubov, on the air of Suspilne.Studiya.
"There is no threat of encirclement there because, in the event of this, there is an opportunity to retreat; the distance and coverage are not sufficient," said the spokesperson.
He also emphasized that in the area of Velyka Novosilka, in the Novopavlivka direction, "there are heavy battles, and any development of the situation is possible in any direction."
According to Trehubov, the Ukrainian command is keeping the situation under control and is also considering various options for actions in this settlement.

Battles for Velyka Novosilka
Velyka Novosilka is a settlement in the Volnovakha district of the Donetsk region, where combat operations have intensified recently. This is not the first attempt by the enemy to capture the settlement. Russia's attempt to capture Velyka Novosilka in the summer of 2022 failed, and in 2023, Ukraine pushed Russian forces southward.
On January 21, the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Grouping of Troops reported that the enemy is attempting to break through the Ukrainian defense on the outskirts of the settlement, with the adversary showing no regard for losses.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy launched eight attacks on January 21 in the directions of Vremivka, Kostiantynopil, and Velyka Novosilka.
