Ukraine’s membership in the European Union has been listed as a separate item among the security guarantees Kyiv seeks. It is one of the key guarantees Ukraine is demanding, stated President Zelenskyy at a press conference following the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris.

"Among the security guarantees we envision, EU membership means economic, political, and geopolitical security guarantees for us. That is why in our approach, this is an important point, highlighted as a separate item," the President said.

Earlier, in an interview with French media, Zelenskyy noted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin fears Ukraine’s success, including its potential accession to the European Union.

EU accession talks

The EU cannot start formal accession talks with Ukraine solely because of the pro-Russian position of Hungary. Budapest has vetoed the start of negotiations.

However, on August 27, it was reported that Lithuania proposed a plan to begin accession talks without Hungary’s consent. According to the Vilnius idea, the technical launch of negotiations could be carried out at the level of the other 26 EU member states.

Ukraine expects that EU countries will decide on starting accession talks in the near future.
