Ukrainian and Russian officials have completed the first direct talks in three years in Istanbul, Sky News reports.

An unnamed source in the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the information about the completion of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia

Ukrainian and Russian officials met in Istanbul today, May 16. The start of the talks became known around 1:30 p.m. The talks probably lasted about 2 hours.

The details of the discussions are still unknown. At the same time, Western media, citing their sources, write that Russia put forward unrealistic demands to Ukraine.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy initially proposed negotiations at the highest level - he was ready to meet with Vladimir Putin. However, the Kremlin leader did not want to fly to Istanbul and sent a delegation headed by his aide, Vladimir Medinsky.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that at these talks, Ukraine wants to achieve a 30-day ceasefire with Russia. This will be the first step on the road to peace.
