Ukraine resumes navigation in Black Sea: UK intelligence's commentary
In December 2023, Ukrainian ports exported more agricultural products than at any time since the Russian invasion. This is due to the creation of an export route by sea, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.
Exports exceeded the monthly volumes achieved under the UN-mediated grain deal between Ukraine and Türkiye when ships were subject to Russian inspections.
"Ukraine has achieved this because it has largely prevented the Russian Black Sea Fleet from operating in the western Black Sea, where it is held at risk by Ukrainian missiles and uncrewed surface vessels," the statement says.
According to UK intelligence, market confidence is supported by the reduction of insurance premiums mediated by the UK under the Unity Facility insurance package, as well as the announcement that Türkiye, Romania, and Bulgaria have formed a naval mine countermeasures force.
The state of this export route is vital in the long run for Ukraine's export revenues, the UK Ministry of Defense notes.
Ukrainian corridor
After Russia withdrew from the grain deal last July, a special maritime corridor was created to protect grain coming from ports. According to the Navy, the corridor had reached its capacity before Russia's full-scale invasion.
According to Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, constant attacks on the Russian fleet allowed them to be pushed to the southeastern part and resume shipping. The northern part is controlled by Ukraine.
