The European Parliament is ready to apply the urgency procedure to speed up the decision on a reparations loan for Ukraine, says President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, The Guardian reports.

According to Metsola, if EU leaders decide today on the reparations loan, the European Parliament will be able to continue its consideration at its first meeting in January.

She stressed that the European Parliament is ready to apply the accelerated urgent procedure so as not to delay funding for Ukraine.

Reparations loan for Ukraine

On December 18-19, the European Council is meeting in Brussels, where EU leaders are to decide on the form of financial support for Ukraine for 2026-2027.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed two options: a reparations loan from frozen Russian assets or joint borrowing based on the EU budget.

The reparations loan initiative is being blocked by Belgium, while Hungary and Slovakia are opposed to joint borrowing.

Recently, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that negotiations on a reparations loan for Ukraine are becoming increasingly difficult.

According to her, there is a lot of pressure from all sides in the context of discussions.

Today, Kallas said that the chances of agreeing on a reparations loan for Ukraine at the summit are estimated at 50-50.

Ursula von der Leyen said that she would not leave today's meeting of EU leaders in Brussels without finding a solution for further financing of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence that Europe would be able to find a compromise on financing Ukraine's needs. According to him, the EU's position on this issue is very clear.
