Russia was able to attack Ukrainian territories and had certain successes. However, there has been a significant decrease in combat clashes on the front line, states Colonel Tarmo Kundla, Head of the Ops Department of the Estonian Defense Forces' (EDF) General Staff.

"Main efforts are likely to focus on the encirclement of Avdiivka, and additional resources may be expected to be drawn there," Kundla believes.

According to him, the Russian army has had some success along the Kupiansk-Kreminna line and managed to capture small villages near Bakhmut. Russian forces also succeeded in seizing smaller territories in the Donetsk region.

Despite this, Ukrainian forces managed to liberate territories in settlements near Velyka Novosilka. Significant battles also continue in the eastern part of the Kherson region.

Kundla notes that despite some successes of the Russian forces, they have not been able to achieve anything decisive.

"Ukraine must defend itself," he says.

He mentions that despite Russia's intensifying attacks on Ukrainian settlements over the past two weeks, these attacks did not weaken the determination of Ukrainians to defend themselves and their anti-aircraft defense.

"However, Ukrainians could better defend themselves if they had the technology to destroy platforms from which air strikes are carried out," Kundla notes.

Frontline situation

Currently, Ukrainian soldiers are mostly in active defense and attack when possible. It was previously reported that Ukrainian soldiers recaptured one of the strongholds from occupiers in the Horlivka area of the Donetsk region. However, for example, the situation in the areas of Avdiivka and Maryinka remains challenging.

Commande-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, reported that Ukrainian servicemen withdrew to the northern outskirts of Maryinka as the Russians completely destroyed the Ukrainian town.
