In May, Ukraine's Defense Forces liberated 100 square kilometers more territory than they lost and, for the first time, struck military-industrial facilities in Moscow and the surrounding region, according to a statement by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi.

"The situation on the front line remains complex and dynamic. The enemy continues its attempts to advance in eastern and southern Ukraine, and the number of combat engagements has increased significantly. The most intense fighting is taking place in the Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka, and Huliaipole directions," he said.

Ukrainian forces continue to maintain the initiative in certain sectors. As a result of active operations in May, the ratio of liberated to lost territory amounted to nearly +100 square kilometers in Ukraine's favor.

Syrskyi emphasized that more than 600 square kilometers of Ukrainian land have been liberated since the beginning of the year.

Enemy losses and billion-dollar damage to Russia

During the month, Ukrainian forces carried out thousands of successful strikes on enemy military targets:

  • Unmanned systems units struck more than 88,000 targets and neutralized more than 30,500 Russian troops;

  • Front and Middle systems continued the systematic destruction of Russian headquarters and arsenals;

  • Deep Strike assets hit 111 enemy military-industrial, energy, and fuel infrastructure facilities supporting the Russian army.

"The direct and indirect economic damage inflicted on the enemy as a result of Deep Strike operations in May amounted to approximately $1.058 billion. For the first time, a series of successful strikes against military-industrial and fuel-and-energy facilities in Moscow and the Moscow region was carried out under a unified operational plan," Syrskyi said.

Air defense operations and shipping security

Air defense forces and assets also carried out important work. In May, they destroyed more than 59,000 aerial targets and repelled 25 enemy missile and air attacks. At the same time, the general stressed that Ukraine continues to need additional modern air defense systems and missiles for them.

Last month, the Navy conducted about 1,500 operations to ensure the safety of civilian shipping in the combat zone. This made it possible to ensure the safe passage of 633 vessels to the ports of the Odesa region and the Danube River.

"Following the meeting, I assigned tasks to all branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the coming period," the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasized.

On June 3, Ukraine struck ships in the fortress city near St. Petersburg, attacking the port of Kronstadt on the opening day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Unmanned Systems Forces command later reported that enemy ships and port infrastructure were hit. Satellite images later recorded drone strikes at a distance of about 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
