Ukraine ready to send food aid to Syria
Ukraine is ready to start exporting food to Syria if the Middle Eastern country needs such supplies, stated Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine Vitaliy Koval in a commentary to Reuters.
"Where it is difficult, we have to be there with our food. We are open to supplying our food and if Syria needs food - then we are there," Koval said.
Reuters reminds that during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, Syria imported food from Russia.
According to Russian and Syrian sources, after the fall of the Assad regime, wheat supplies from Russia to Syria were stopped. The reason for Moscow's decision was allegedly uncertainty about the new Syrian leadership and delays in payment.
As Reuters reports, Ukraine traditionally supplies wheat and corn to the Middle East, but not to Syria. In the 2023/24 season, only about 6,000 tons of Ukrainian corn out of total corn exports of 29.4 million tons entered the Syrian market.
Ukraine is ready to restore relations with Syria
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who ruled for more than 20 years, failed to win the war against the rebels. He fled the country. Syria now has a new leadership.
One of Assad's allies was Russia. However, Moscow did not help the Syrian President maintain control over the country.
Against this backdrop, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine is ready to work on restoring relations with Syria in the future.
