Ukraine ready for Trump's victory in US elections - WP
This month, the United States will hold presidential elections, the outcome of which will impact Ukraine. However, according to The Washington Post, Ukrainian officials reject the idea that former US President Donald Trump's victory will be catastrophic for Kyiv.
According to the newspaper, Ukrainian officials reject the idea that Trump's victory would be catastrophic for Kyiv and do not fear this possibility. Instead, the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is optimistic that the Ukrainian leader can influence Trump if they establish a personal connection.
An anonymous Ukrainian official who worked in Zelenskyy's government during Trump's presidency even noted that the Zelenskyy administration is more connected to Trump.
According to the official, Zelenskyy has always seen similarities between himself and Trump, which, according to the Ukrainian president, would help them build a good relationship. Both came to power with atypical backgrounds outside the political system: Trump came from the business world, while Zelenskyy was an actor and comedian.
Trump's statements on ending the war
The newspaper recalled that Trump has repeatedly stated that if he wins the election, he will help Ukraine and Russia quickly conclude an agreement to end the war, but did not offer specific details. His running mate, J.D. Vance, who is viewed with suspicion by many Ukrainian officials, has talked about a peace plan that would freeze the current front lines, leaving much of the country in Russian hands.
Instead, in an interview with Scandinavian journalists, Zelenskyy appeared to respond to Trump's words about a quick decision.
“We are also on the side of quick decision of peace, but we should not have to pay for this. We are not aggressors. Russia is the aggressor; they should pay,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
Two other Ukrainian officials said that although Trump's messages about Ukraine were negative, they believe that this is only campaign rhetoric and will not necessarily correlate with his actions in office.
US presidential election
Two politicians will be running in this year's US presidential election: Donald Trump, a candidate from the Republican Party, and Kamala Harris, a candidate from the Democratic Party. The election will be held next week, on Tuesday, November 5.
According to the latest polls, the candidates' ratings are almost equal.
Some states fear violent protests in the event of a Republican's loss.
Meanwhile, Trump has filed a lawsuit against CBS over an interview with Kamala Harris and is demanding $10 billion in compensation.
