Ukraine has proposed a new strategy for sanctions against Russia to its coalition partners, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, Advisor and Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, tells in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.

The strategy focuses on supplementing current sanctions lists with additional targets rather than adopting new comprehensive sanction packages. This idea is now being promoted among a number of countries.

"Regarding tankers (imposing sanctions on the tanker fleet – ed.), we have a small coalition of European countries – what I would call the more hawkish ones on sanctions. These include the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, sometimes Germany, Poland, the Baltic states, and others. Together, we are actively pushing (this idea – ed.)," Vlasiuk said.

According to the advisor, the idea is to add 10–20 positions to existing sanctions lists without waiting for a new large sanctions package to be adopted. "This approach is possible, and there's a need to call it some grand sanctions package. It's simply an addition to the sanctions list with companies and individuals," the Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy explained.

This idea is currently being actively discussed, and the additions could include restrictions on tankers transporting energy resources and transportation organizations.

"Our goal, together with some of the partners I mentioned, is to encourage all allies to expand or update sanctions lists as quickly as possible by the end of the year," Vlasiuk added.

As reported earlier, the European Union is developing a new sanctions package targeting the Russian Federation due to its war against Ukraine. This package of restrictions is set to strengthen measures isolating the country's industry from imports and aims to prevent the circumvention of existing sanctions.
