Ukraine intends to open humanitarian corridors to evacuate residents of the Kursk region amidst ongoing fighting in the area, according to Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, Iryna Vereshchuk.

According to her, Ukraine is creating a safety zone on Russian territory to protect the regions bordering Russia. Russian civilians live in this zone. They are under the protection of humanitarian law.

Therefore, as Vereshchuk emphasized, the Ukrainian military plans to:

  • Conduct humanitarian operations to support Russian civilians in the border areas of the Kursk region;
  • Open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians, both towards Russia and Ukraine;
  • Allow international humanitarian organizations access to the safety zone for humanitarian response and monitoring the humanitarian situation.

Fighting in the Kursk region

Battles have been ongoing in the Kursk region for over a week. Ukrainian defenders have entered the region and have already managed to push out the Russian forces from several settlements.

Since the beginning of the operation, videos have appeared online showing residents of border towns in the Kursk region complaining that local authorities did not assist them with evacuation, forcing them to leave on their own.

At the same time, the tactics of the Ukrainian military are significantly different from those of the Russian soldiers. Ukrainian soldiers do not destroy Russian towns and villages and do not kill Russian civilians. Such conclusions can be made from videos posted online.

Today, August 14, it was reported that Ukrainian forces have completely cleared Sudzha of the Russian troops.
